One of the prestigious award granting institutions has raised concerns that academic freedom is facing challenges in the US and elsewhere, with political interference causing long-lasting negative effects – while scientists prepare for next week’s prize revelations.

The former president has introduced or suggested a swathe of measures in his second term that critics argue will hamper education and scientific research.

“In my view over time, this may cause serious damage,” the official informed the news agency in an interview. “Academic freedom ... stands as a foundation of the democratic system.”

The administration rejects stifling academic freedom, stating these actions will cut waste and promote American research development.

Prestigious Award Context

These prestigious awards, considered widely as the highest research honors globally, are scheduled to be revealed starting soon, commencing with the award for medicine or physiology next Monday and ending with the announcement of recipients in economic sciences the following week.

The awards were created by prosperous Scandinavian dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel and are also handed out for exceptional accomplishments in physics, chemical sciences, literary works and peace. They come with a monetary award of 11 million Swedish crowns (1.2 million dollars).

Suggested Reforms

The administration has suggested reducing the budget for the National Institutes of Health, the world’s largest funder of medical studies, and wants to dismantle the Education Department, in a bid to reduce the national involvement in education in favour of greater authority by local governments.

The government has also said it would prioritise giving research funding to programmes that emphasize “patriotic education”, and demanded that schools cap international undergraduate enrollment at fifteen percent.

“Regarding studies, it’s going to be a big dip in the capabilities of US researchers can do and their permitted activities, their publication opportunities, their funding prospects. Consequently, this will create big effects,” said the official, who is chairperson of the research policy committee at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

The White House said in an emailed response that America was the largest funder of scientific research globally.

“Our targeted cuts to waste, fraud, and abuse in academic financing and immigration systems are going to enhance Americans’ innovative and scientific dominance,” the statement read.

Trump has also been wrangling with multiple elite institutions – some of whose faculty could become the Nobel prize winners in coming days – warning about cutting government support over issues including pro-Palestinian protests related to conflict in the region, university inclusion and gender identity regulations.

Internationally recognized scholar the academic, who won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences recently for research of how institutions affect prosperity, stated that Trump’s actions would definitely impede economic growth.

“Such measures are categorically very negative and especially regarding employment growth,” the economist, who is a professor at MIT Sloan School of Management, commented.

“All engineering and science-type activities, I think, are going to be affected,” the expert said. “Life Sciences is a particularly dynamic sector currently and the National Institutes of Health is, for whatever reason, facing truly massive cuts.”
