A Tooth Fairy Tale Review: Cartoon Adventure with a Sprinkling of Kid-Appropriate Tween Love Story

Throughout this animated adventure for preteens, the world of fairies is dedicated to gathering teeth from slumbering youngsters and placing gold beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to gathering baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He is just a bit more interested in the underlying economics behind it all: the fairies hand over the molars to unseen goblins, who provide metal as payment. However, Van’s interest grows when he spots a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be not at all the hideous gnome he expected.

A Forbidden Connection and Shared Threat

Everything is prepared for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of teen romance (even though it remains perfectly appropriate for younger kids). The goblin and fairy groups are estranged from each other, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to bring people together. The two species portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet both maintain prejudiced beliefs about the other. Fairies are supposed to be self-centered types, given to stealing anything they want, while goblins are reportedly stupid, foul-smelling, and backward, but are in fact bright and advanced in technology.

Naturally, such a setup requires a common enemy to join forces against, and that need is met in the form of some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they aim to devour the goblins and fairies, and they make for quite savage, though not particularly skilled, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Overall Impression

There aren’t all that many animated films aimed at the kind of audience that is beginning to have early romances, but are not old enough for the content teenagers are watching in lieu of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to be their next favorite movie, but it’s a decent choice.

The Tooth Fairy Story releases in Scottish cinemas from 10 October and across the United Kingdom beginning October 24.
